ThermaCELL® MOSQUITO REPELLENT
PRODUCT ADVANTAGES AND SAFETY FEATURES

The ThermaCELL Mosquito Repellent derives its advantages over battery powered products by virtue of the high energy content of butane. Also, the ThermaCELL system is safer and cleaner than paraffin candle heated products. The butane is supplied in convenient, easy to use, safe, and environmentally friendly disposable cartridges.

The butane in ThermaCELL cartridges contains over thirty times the energy (by weight) of alkaline batteries. A ThermaCELL cartridge contains 12 grams of butane. It has enough energy to run a Mosquito Repellent for up to twelve hours. An AA battery weighs slightly less than a cartridge. The AA battery could power the Mosquito Repellent for eight minutes. Empty ThermaCELL cartridges are recyclable; they have no heavy metals like many batteries do. ThermaCELL Repellent Mats are small, light, easy to use, and effective for up to 4 hours.

ThermaCELL products have long lives. They are made with quality materials and are carefully inspected before shipment. Another reason for product longevity is that an important functional component, the control valve, is a part of the cartridge. It is renewed every time a new cartridge is inserted.

Safety is important for all ThermaCELL products. ThermaCELL cartridges screw into the product. A seal is made before the valve opens so that there is no spray of butane gas during attachment or removal. Cartridges can be attached or removed without butane leakage at any time. The cartridges are manufactured to ASTM standards so they can withstand physical abuse. Each production lot is pressure and leak tested. Cartridge vessels are tested to a pressure of 150 psig. This is almost four times the pressure that a cartridge would see in an airplane at full altitude. (It is why ThermaCELL curling irons can be carried on commercial flights.)

ThermaCELL appliances use the principal of flame arresting to make it impossible for the combustion within the appliance to propagate to combustible materials outside. The Mosquito Repellent will not initiate the combustion of a flammable mixture of butane and air or natural gas and air if the operating appliance in placed in such an atmosphere. If a ThermaCELL product is turned on and left on, but not started, the amount of butane that escapes is so small that it dissipates before reaching the flammability limit. It cannot ignite. ThermaCELL Lantern products are not flame arrested. Instead, they have the added feature of tip-over protection. If a ThermaCELL Lantern is tipped over, it will shut off automatically.

Unlike electrical appliances, there is no danger of electrocution from frayed or defective wiring with ThermaCELL products. In normal operation, the longest a ThermaCELL Mosquito Repellent can operate for is twelve hours (if the cartridge is full.) So, we carefully test the product to be sure that it presents no hazard due to overheating when run continuously for the full life of a cartridge. In addition, we conduct numerous tests on both the cartridges and the Mosquito Repellent to guarantee the safety of the product.

All ThermaCELL Mosquito Repellent products can be turned on and off many times as neither butane nor repellent are consumed when the unit if off.

ThermaCELL Mosquito Repellent products fall into two easy-to-operate categories:

MR-1; MR-1 Camo; MR-9 Lantern
For these products, a repellent mat is slid under the grill, the cartridge is screwed in firmly, the ON-OFF button is slid to the ON position, and the start button pushed several times. To turn the unit off, the switch is returned to the OFF position. The repellent mat will last for up to four hours of on time.

MR-1B; MR-9B Lantern
For these products, a repellent mat is slid under the grill, the cartridge is screwed in firmly. This starts the butane flow. For the MR-1B, slide the ignition window to the open position, place the flame from a lighter or match near the opening and the unit will start. To turn the unit off, unscrew the cartridge. For the MR-9B the flow of butane starts when the cartridge is screwed in. Then the user raises the cover and places a flame from a lighter or match near the burner. The unit will start. To turn the unit off, unscrew the cartridge.

Once removed from the foil, unused repellent mats will last for several weeks if stored in a cool, dry place.

There is a small amount of vapor (d-cis/trans allethrin) released from the mat during normal operation. It presents no health hazard for use outdoors with adults, children (please do not let children play with the product) and pets. The EPA of each of the 50 states plus the Federal EPA have registered the ThermaCELL Mosquito Repellent. They evaluated it for safety and functionality as well as environmental impact. Skin toxicity, inhalation toxicity and oral toxicity were a part of the information reviewed by the EPA during the registration process.

ThermaCELL Mosquito Repellent products are safe, convenient and highly effective. We have field test data showing that the ThermaCELL Mosquito Repellent is effective against mosquitoes, certain sand flies, culicoides (biting midges which are also known as no-see-ums) and black flies. The EPA reviewed our efficacy data as a part of the registration process.
